Brett Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday (8-18-09). It had been speculated for months in Minnesota that Brett Favre would eventually sign with Minnesota. Coach Brad Childress picked up Brett at the airport and Vikings fans were out at Winter Park in huge numbers to great him. Fox News (channel 9) polled Vikings fans on whether they thought the Favre addition was good or bad. 74% of the poll takers were for the Favre acquisition. That is no real surprise as the other two quarterbacks, Rosenfels and Jackson, have not looked very good in training camp in Mankato. Jackson stunk it up as the starter last year. I was there for the NY Giants game and watched wide open receivers running all over, all day and Jackson consistently threw the ball 20 yards away from the receivers. Rosenfels career so far has been mediocre as well. Though he was usually thrown to the wolves by the Texans, he is no top echelon prize. The Vikings look to make a great gain overall though. Favre will cost the Vikings plenty in salary cap money (somewhere around $15 million). Favre jerseys are being ordered by the thousands, ticket sales for the Vikes have skyrocketed (as have the ticket prices). I expect the Vikings to make well over $100 million this year off of him, not to mention the tremendous amount of extra national exposure they will receive for having Favre on the team. Packer fan response was typical of the cheese heads. There were a lot of comments about him being a traitor, being washed up, etc. Who is the real traitor in Favre's eyes, why it is the Packers. They tossed him aside like an old pair of shoes. I understand it somewhat as their new coach (younger than Favre) wanted to establish the Pack as his team and that was not going to be possible with an icon like Favre around. Kind of sad the Pack would dump him right in the middle of the longest continuous game streak for QB's. Favre will make the Vikings an immediate Super Bowl contender. Favre draws crowds and is liked all over the world. Though Favre is pushing 40, he still is head and shoulders better than the other Vikings QB's and the Vikings know it. If Favre has half of the magic that he once had it should be enough to get the Vikes at least back to the NFC championship where something always goes wrong for them (Interference by Drew Pearson that put the Cowboys in a Super Bowl. The dropped ball by Darrin Nelson that would have beaten the Redskins (John Rigggins would have fallen into obscurity like Wade Wilson) and the missed field goal by the Vikes against Atlanta (would have been a 10 point lead with 2 minutes left). The Vikings seem to have the tools. They have a great offensive line. They have two great running backs in Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. They have excellent wide receivers with the new addition of Percy Harvin who single handedly carved up Oklahoma in the national championship game last year. They have a solid defense too. If they can straighten out their traditional sloppy special teams play this could truly be a special team. Look for them to go 12-4 with a home game in the playoffs. If they can eek out 13-3 they could have home field all of the way through the playoffs. Bet on it. Data -Staff writer
